Could Lorne have picked two more polarizing acts? I have a friend who isn’t the biggest fan of either (well, that’s what she says) and I know she’s staying far away from this episode (until I send her clips the day after and she’ll be like “OK, I guess that wasn’t the worst”). What I’m trying to say is that: 1) I have friends I swear and 2) you kind of need to be tricked into liking anything Anne Hathaway or Rihanna do. I enjoy both ladies so I am excited for this episode.
What can we expect from this episode? Anne Hathaway has hosted twice before and she’s pretty game for almost anything. Remember her great Katie Holmes impression (I can’t find a working-Canadian link for it, so go yell at NBC)? I’ll assume they MIGHT go there since the Tom/Katie split is still, sort of, somewhat, relevant and she has the impression down. With that said, it’s a very heavy might but don’t count it out. I find that they tend to go down the pop culture route more often with female hosts so you can possibly expect The Miley Cyrus Show sketch to return, especially since it hasn’t been done yet this year and Miley has so much to catch us all up on. What else? Well reportedly they cut a sketch about The Voice during the dress rehearsal last week so, with a female host it could be more likely to happen or they could just skip that and go straight to The X-Factor, with Anne probably doing Britney.
All of this will take a backseat to the (obvious) post-election political cold open and probably another political sketch that would appear right after her monologue. One will most likely feature some sort of Obama-post-win sketch and I could see the other being a tape piece about Romney dealing with his loss, which I’d like to see if done well.
Something’s telling me we could see a Twilight-tape piece in there somewhere as well. Again, with Anne being the only female host before Breaking Dawn PT2 is released, it makes the most sense (to me at least, which means it probably won’t happen). A slim chance we’d see anything Dark Knight related, but don’t count out a Les Miserables spoof. Doubtful, but you never know.
As for The First Woman of Instagram, Rihanna? She’ll perform, of course, but I think this time she might skip appearing in any sketches. She’s fancied a Digital Short many times before, but I think she’s just there for the music, you know? #RIHPOST
With all of that said, probably none of this will and it’ll be a night filled with terrible, random, original sketches.
